Citizenship and Legislation (CAP) Committee
Chairperson - Mat Zapinski

The CAP Committee, along with the Worker - to - Worker Program have been handing out information
about this year's election. We hope you will take this information, read it and share it with others, not only at
 work, but at home and with friends. If you have any questions or suggestions, please see any of our
Worker - to - Worker canvassers.

UAW ENDORSEMENTS
The UAW endorses candidates for office based on how they stand or have voted on working families issues.
 Each candidate that seeks the endorsement of the UAW must be screened by UAW members form each Region.
 When you see that a candidate in your district is endorsed by the UAW,
you can be sure he will work for working families of the UAW.

UAW ISSUES
The UAW has taken a stance on many issues that effect union members,
 as well as non-union.

* The budget surplus and what should be done with it.
* Civil  and Human rights.
* Health & Saftey
* Right to organize/trade policy
* Equal pay for women/Violence against women.

The UAW's policy on these and others can be reviewed at the
 Union Hall or at the Work Center.

THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY OFF

Tuesday, November 7, 2000 will be the most important day off the union has ever negotiated for us.
 This day is not just to vote, but to help GET OUT THE VOTE!!
 The CAP Committee is asking each and every Local 909 member to get involved in this year's election by:

* Telling 5 friends about working family candidates,
*Work the polls on election day,
*Have a political party the weekend before election.

Anyone wanting to volunteer can call our Local Union Hall at 810-759-4320 or
 Region I at 248-583-1700 and ask for Ruth Eberle.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The bottom line is that labor must help elect:
Al Gore & Joe Lieberman s President and Vice President
Debbie Stabenow to U.S. Senate
Win back the Michigan House of Representatives,
Elect three (3) new judges to the Michigan Supreme Court
(Thomas Fitzgerald, Marietta Robinson & Edward Thomas)
We must all roll up our sleeves and give whatever it take so we can win on election day,
Tuesday, November 7, 2000.

In Solidarity

We urge all registered voters to go out and vote.

  G.M./U.A.W. Tuition Assistance
     In 1999 the U.A.W. worked hard to enact legislation that would continue to keep tuition assistance for our
     children tax exempt. We were able to work out an extension until December 21, 2001. This was to expire on
     June 30, 2000. This is just one of the programs that your CAP donation helps support.

  Living Wage passes in Warren
     In 1999 the UAW worked hard to urge Congress to pass legislation
exempting from taxation our children `s tuition assistance benefit. this
benefit is currently considered taxable income. We were able to work out an
extension keeping tuition assistance benefits for workers tax-free until
December 21, 2001. This tax exemption had been scheduled to expire on June
30.2000. This is just one of the many issues your CAP donations help support.
