Information, Awareness & Access to Care

Providing Oral Health Programs for the Community

Tri-County Dental Health Council brings together dental professionals, educators and volunteers to improve the health and well-being of the tri-count community.  Since 1932, The Council has promoted wider access to oral health services for underserved people and has worked to improve oral health through education.  Today, Tri-County Dental Health Council serves thousands of residents throughout Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties by:

  • Improving Access to Dental Care:

Referring disadvantaged tri-county residents to dental professionals who proved affordable care in public or  private facilities.

  • Educating the Community:

Providing in-service training and educational materials, presenting information at health fairs and professional meetings, and advocating for the need of underserved groups.

  • Offering Volunteer Opportunities:

Coordination the activities of dental professional, students and others who want to give something back to the community.  The Council is a charitable agency supported by United Way Community Services and by organizations and individuals concerned about oral health.

IMPROVING ACCESS TO DENTAL CARE

The council is committed to improving the access to oral health services.  We put people in touch with dental professionals who are willing to help those in need.

Information and Referral Services

The Council maintains up-to-date information on dentists who accept Medicaid and who provide care for low income patients.  We also help people with special needs.  The Council regularly updates its roster of accessible dental providers.

Adult Dental Care Access Program (ADCAP)

Low income, uninsured workers who need extensive dental treatment are helped by the Council's volunteer dentists.  The dentists treat patients for 8% - 25% of their usual fees.  The percentage is based on the client's income and family size.  The difference between the payment and the dentist's fee is an in-kind donation to the Council

Emergency Assistance Program

The Council verifies and individual's eligibility and arranges for emergency treatment through a network of volunteer dentists.  Based on available funds, the Council extends limited aid for emergency oral surgery to qualified applicants.

Senior Denture Program

Low income adults over age 60 are matched with volunteer dentists who provide complete dentures or relines.  Clients pay 8% - 25% of the dentist's usual fee for denture services based on income and family size.  Volunteer dentists donate part of their services.

EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY

The Council is a primary information resource for numerous health and human service agencies as well as for Michigan's decision makers.

Oral Health Resource Library

The Council's extensive library of educational film and videos, posters and hands-on models are loaned to dental professionals, educators and organizations.

Dental Health inservice Training

The Council provides teacher training and training for caregivers who work with developmentally disabled individuals.  This training teaches specific techniques and allows detailed question and answer sessions to address issues important to the participants.

Community Awareness and Advocacy

The Council leads a coalition of groups and individuals promoting oral health issues.  Staff members provide information and testimony about the need for increased access to oral health services.  Agency staff also serve on State and local health advisory committees.  The Council participates in health fairs and agency exhibits in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.

OFFERING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Tri-County Dental Health Council needs the dedication of volunteers on our Board of Directors and in our office.  We offer the following volunteer opportunities to both general and specialist dentists, who want to contribute their time and services to disadvantaged people.

Adult Dental Care Access Program

General dentists provide comprehensive dental treatment for uninsured clients who work full time in low paying jobs.  Clients pay a percentage of the dentists' usual fees.  Dentists donate part; of their services.  Commitment: one patient per year.

Dental specialists see Access Program patients referred by the general dentists through the Council.  Specialists accept the patient's percentage and donate the balance as in-kind services.  Commitment: Specialists decide the number of patients They will treat per year.

Senior Denture Program

Dentists volunteer to provide denture services to uninsured low income older adults.  Commitment: Volunteer dentists decide the number of patients they will treat per year.
